I completed my Bachelor's degree (BA) in Neuroscience from Duke University. After graduating, I took a year and a half to complete clinical research full-time studying alterations in brain structure and function which are consistently linked to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). One of the biggest goals was to examine the independent and interactive effects of HIV and marijuana on the structural and functional organization of the brain. Working in this lab gave me my first initial experiences with clinical research. I completed a senior thesis on this work and published a couple of manuscripts—this earned me the honor of graduating with distinction.

My academic goals include matriculating into medical school and ultimately becoming a surgeon. I really would like to become both a clinical and academic leader in whichever field I find myself gravitating toward because I learned during my 6-year research experience that I truly enjoy it. I’m also considering applying to MD-Ph.D. programs; I would like to work closely with patients while dedicating time to research to improve overall knowledge and treatment protocols and achieve better clinical outcomes.

I have a strong interest in colorectal surgery as a number of my family members have passed away from rectal cancer. I am ecstatic to be able to conduct research while also studying under one of the most knowledgeable and accomplished physicians in this field. I am hoping that upon completion of this position, I hope to be well-versed in colorectal procedures, while also having the opportunity to publish manuscripts. The research component of this position was a huge draw for me as I know I will have the opportunity to help report on better treatment outcomes in patients where novel technology (i.e., SP Robot) is being used. Ultimately, the multi-disciplinary approach to treatment is something that I am excited to learn from.

I have always drawn on my spirituality and my family in the face of challenges. Growing up with so many family challenges certainly helped me persevere through numerous academic and life challenges. They are my inspiration as I know that these challenges are temporary so when I feel anxious I look toward them for support.n

I am originally from Dallas, Texas. My favorite place that I have ever lived would probably be Durham, North Carolina as the surrounding area is very forested and I really enjoy hiking and being out in nature. Unfortunately, I have not traveled out of the country, but my favorite place that I have ever visited would have to be Redwood National Park again due to the scenery and how calming it was.
